Level 02 Semester 02

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

I have learned the basic understandings of story-boarding and of using after effects to turn something from still image into moving image. My understanding of the program has come on leaps and bounds throughout the module and I have eventually got to grips and enjoyed working with moving image and sound.

2. What approaches to generating work and solutions to problems have you developed and how have they helped?

Storyboards and time-lines are a big part of the digital media design process. Once you get your head around story-boarding it really starts to help and become useful with the whole process. Time-lines help you plan for individual compositions which is useful with music and sound also.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalize on these?

I have started to accept what the brief is even if i don't fully understand or like it. I just got on with it and instead of not enjoying and moaning the whole way through I learned to really enjoy it. If we get any briefs that I don't like in the future I would shrug them of straight away I will try and enjoy them, because at the the end of the day, now, I think a brief is what you make of it.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how could you exploit these more fully?

Maybe it's because I have been staring at the animation for a good three or four weeks I have started to feel that it is a little boring. Also I haven't explored or experimented with a whole lot of media or ways of animating my ideas. I don't think i exploited that part of the process to its full potential.

5. Identify five things that you will do different next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

Research – I want to maximize my radical research in order for it to inform my ideas fully.

Tests –I should use what skills I have learned within the program to test more relevant animation techniques.

Skipping Development - I don't seem to have a lot of developmental work, I have found my idea and really gone for it strong instead of broadening my horizons a little.

More idea generations – I tend to have an idea, not like it, have another, like it and go for it all the way too the end. If I explore more ideas I can really exploit my work to its fullest potential.

Relevant Sound Track - I just kind of heard and listened to songs that I liked and thought would fit. I didn't really try to find songs to relevant to my research.

Spike Jonze - Skateboarding Stuff

Girl - Yeah Right

Lakai - Fully Flared

Chocolate - Hot Chocolate

All intro's to skate videos by Spike Jonze. Girl has a really nice simple high speed camera for the effect. Lakai has the effects from the explosions and a high speed camera. Chocolate had a really good soundtrack to carry a strong concept.

All typical of Spike, and all very effective and impressive. Simple shots, clever effects. No animations or 3D shite.

The thing with Spike Jonzes stuff is that its not clever animation or 3D graphics, its strong concepts and cleverly shot.

The Chemical Brothers - Elektrobank

Spike Jonze's music video for The Chemical Brother's song Elektrobank starring Sofia Coppola. Really well shot, nice concept and edited to the music.

Levis - Flyweight Jeans

Another Levi's advert from Spike Jonze. This one however is really well shot and has nice music. His legs are green screened (just wearing green trousers) and some other guy is dancing wearing a green top and head. 

Levi's - Wide Leg

Directed by Spike Jonze. Its a clever but not amazingly well shot or impressive advert. Funny concept though.

This is my animation. Prett gash. It's supposed to be wide-screen too.

Bored At the Office

This is a animation that my brother did as his FMP for a BA (Hons) in Multimedia Design. It's pretty impressive as its all 3D.

The Big Lebowski - Type

This is a scene for The Big Lebowski. Every little detail is perfect, from when he says 'lanes' like a bowling ally, up to when he says 'i'll pull the fucking trigger till' it goes click', and the whole atmosphere of the scene changes.

This is just a site where the designers republic post some work whilst they re-design there site. Pretty nice site.

This is quite a tacky site, but the dude specializes in motion graphics, his show reel has a lot of stop motion on which i would like to try out in this digital media module at some point. Check out his show reel.

The T-shirts are really nice looking too.

Obviously we were shown this. But after hours of exploration, I found out that not only is the way you can explore really nice, the illustration and details (music etc) are really nice too.

It's a pretty mad website. Hard to locate your self around, but put together in a really cool way. Every time you move the and click the mouse a new section appears on the page.

Big Active - Moving Image showreel

I like it all apart from the Kam Tang stuff. I especially like the Kate Gibb Chemical Brothers one. The perspective is spot on and it looks really cool.
